SYSTEMSLOGIX offers AntiSpam. (continued)
Introduction to AntiSpam
AntiSpam offers a more aggressive method to counter the continuing junk
e-mail problem. It is an anti-spam system, which is designed to shift the
filtering workload from the recipient to the spammer (or the legitimate
sender). The fundamental idea is that spammers will not take the time to
confirm that they want to send you e-mail, but a legitimate sender will. The
system maintains two lists of addresses: a "blacklist" of senders that will
always be blocked, and a "whitelist" of senders that will never be blocked.
If someone sends you e-mail from an address not listed in either list or
they don't violate all 5 criterion of spam (using the latest SpamAssassin
technology), they will receive a verification e-mail (and their message will
be queued temporarily). Many messages from the same sender will only result
in one verification e-mail sent out to that address. A verification e-mail
is an immediate reply message using a random dictionary word that the sender
must replace the subject line and reply with. If they give the correct
"response" to the verification e-mail, they are added to your white list and
their queued message(s) get forwarded to your inbox.
Attachments and Content
Spammers have turned to virus writers to create email relay viruses meant to
open attachments that are infected with this type of virus. This could allow
a spammer to send spam to thousands of people through your home or business
without your knowledge. We solved this problem by allowing the administrator
the ability to define what attachments are acceptable. AntiSpam offers
administrator configurable blocking of attached files. It also allows the
blocking of content by keywords, configurable through a web-based
administration tool.
Filtering Only Method
Filtering is a method that detects then deletes messages based on origin or
Subject line and body text, or by known spamming techniques.
It is our experience that this antispam technique will not totally eliminate
spam and works best for spammers. The spammer is smarter than the filter.
The reason? The amount of junk Email is growing and always changing.
Spam is forged, making it impossible to determine the source. Spammers use a
multitude of software that modify things like the subject line and body with
every message, or disguising spam to look like someone you might know.
Filtering alone has one major flaw; the filter is always playing catch up
with the spammers. By the time you train your filters to recognize new types
of junk Email, the spammers are already developing the next type that will
get through.
Verification Response Method
Recent articles regarding verification type response system requiring the
sender to validate themselves pose some interesting thoughts. One article
stated that this type of system would cause twice the traffic and help the
spammers by validating Emails.
Our option to integrate with Spam Assassin and optional dns blocking
drastically reduces the outbound traffic. If the Email is pre-determined
that it is spam the request never goes out. The only way the spammers can
get Email to you with a response type system is to actually supply a real
return Email address or hire thousands of people to reply to all the
confirmation Email thus giving you the means of pressing charges after you
request they stop.
Even if they did hire thousands of people to reply, the amount of junk Email
would still be drastically reduced. A human will never work as fast as the
Email robot programs out there.
Manual Method
Manual mode allows a user to turn off Automatic Verification Responses from
being sent, thus allowing the AntiSpam user to select which address are
requested to verify or give the user an easy way to build a white list
without requiring already known users to verify who they are.
Proxy Mode
This option when configured by the administrator allows AntiSpam to act as a
proxy to an existing mail server such as Microsoft Exchange Server.
